Sudan

Overview

Near East Foundation (NEF) has been operating in Sudan since 1978. NEF's overarching goal in Sudan is to foster inclusive and equitable growth that improves the lives of the Sudanese population. By supporting locally-led initiatives, NEF aims to create lasting change, harnessing the potential of communities to drive their own development. Through collaboration with government entities, civil society organizations, and local partners, NEF strives to build a sustainable future for the people of Sudan, one that ensures their well-being and empowers them to thrive.

Sudan, located in Northeast Africa, boasts a rich cultural heritage and diverse natural resources. Despite its potential, the nation faces significant challenges. With a population of over 41 million, Sudan has experienced a protracted history of conflicts, economic instability, and natural disasters, resulting in displacement and limited access to basic services. The 2023 war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis - an overwhelming 6.3 million people are displaced, more than 20 million are food insecure, and 6 million are on the brink of famine in conflict-affected areas.

NEF provides immediate relief assistance to communities through access to critical water, hygiene, and sanitation needs. Additionally, NEF supports conflict, crisis, and climate-affected populations to enhance their resilience and self-reliance. This entails implementing sustainable development programs that promote agricultural productivity, natural resource management, and entrepreneurship. NEF also seeks to strengthen local institutions and provide capacity-building support so that communities can effectively address their own development needs.
