Overview

For more than three decades, the Near East Foundation has touched the lives of millions of disadvantaged people in the African nation of Sudan.

As one of the few continuously operating international NGOs in the country, our projects are improving lives and communities through education, peace-building, business development, agriculture and natural resource management, climate adaptation, and health care.

Creating Hope and Opportunity

Since 1978, NEF has gained an unparalleled depth of knowledge about local communities and institutions, and the development challenges facing Sudan. Currently, a team of 10 highly trained staff members—all Sudanese—focus their efforts on three programmatic areas:

  • Building Peace through Economic Cooperation by providing ex-combatants with training in business and conflict management skills that enable them to reintegrate into their communities, both economically and socially.
  • Improving Natural Resource Management and Environmental Sustainability through our work with gum arabic producers in North Kordofan to help them adopt efficient techniques that improve the quantity and quality of their harvest, and plant Acacias trees to preserve and expand forests.
  • Providing Health Care and Humanitarian Relief

NEF's Sudan headquarters is in Khartoum, with field offices in Dilling (South Kordofan) and El Obeid (North Kordofan).
