Where We Work

Morocco

Overview

For over two decades, the Near East Foundation (NEF) has worked with communities across Morocco to create opportunities for jobs and income, education, and participation in public decision-making.

NEF projects in Morocco improve lives through initiatives in rural livelihoods, primary education, urban youth development, enterprise growth, and agriculture and natural resources.

Mobilizing Communities for Change

Since 1987, NEF has developed strong technical expertise in local communities and institutions, and the issues facing Morocco. Building on its years of experience in the country, NEF’s current work has a dual programmatic focus:

  • Building more sustainable, profitable natural resource management by helping thousands of small farmers in arid eastern Morocco use agricultural water more efficiently and more productively.
  • Engaging youth in government in both rural and urban areas, where NEF is strengthening relationships between youth and their elected officials, fostering youth leadership and education, and improving the effectiveness of local government outreach to youth constituents.

Currently, a team of ten highly trained staff members—all Moroccan—work out of two NEF-Morocco offices in Oujda and Rabat.
