DIGNITY
Ahmed lives in Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, one of Cairo’s oldest and poorest neighborhoods. He was able to start his business with a small loan. Micro-
finance has been made possible here through a community association which NEF’s Center for Development Services in Egypt helped the people create and fund.
The association’s leaders review applicants, grant the loans, receive payments and re-lend the money to other borrowers, making the system self-sustaining. Now Ahmed fashions tools for the shoemaking trade clustered near his shop in Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, helping to create a mutually supportive and self-sufficient community. Once unemployed, Ahmed now fills the role of community leader.
