Some Joy for the Poorest West Bank Families
Where our multifaceted programs are concentrated, NEF celebrated the holy month of Ramadan and following Eid al Fiter feast in the "cluster" of nine villages northwest of Nablus, conducting a broad campaign of food distribution. Poor families received about 500 food packages and 570 packages of dairy products, while 400 packages of sweets went to kindergarten children.
Selected locations were agricultural communities suffering high unemployment: Aseera Alshamalya, Ignisieya, Nusf Ijbeel, B ... (more) |

Again In 2006, NEF Recognizes the Importance of Ramadan Traditions, Collaborating With Local NGOs & Committees
NEF has been working in the Arab world since 1915 and honors its traditions. That includes the Holy Month of Ramadan, a time for inner reflection by Muslims, devotion to God, self control, fasting, community, and above all, a time of giving and feeling for the poor. Zakat or alms-giving is considered a personal responsibility to ease the economic hardships of others. During Ramadan for several years now, NEF has provided food packages to the very poor and most needy in the communities NEF serves ... (more) |

Opinion of NEF's Eid Celebration: "This is the Way it should be--Something Felt from the Heart."
It has been a long, cold winter in the West Bank and fuel prices are up. As people struggle to make ends meet, they don't know whether to spend their limited funds on heating their homes or buying food. That conflict was compounded in early January as the Eid Al-Adhia feast approached--one of the most important events in the Muslim calendar both religiously and socially. It is a celebratory time when fresh meat adhaee is enjoyed. "The adahee means a lot to Muslims," remarked Near East Founda ... (more) |

Ramadan Food Packages--One Mother Fainted...Her First Meal in 3 Days
The Holy Month of Ramadan is a time for inner reflection by Muslims, devotion to God, self control, and fasting from sunrise to sunset. It is also supposed to be a particularly joyous time when relatives and friends invite each other over to gather around a table and break the fast together--Iftar--and above all a time of giving and feeling for the poor. For several years the Near East Foundation and its partners have joined together to honor these traditions, extending help to the poor and ne ... (more) |

For Some It's Getting, for Others It's Giving--But It's All about Education
Mohamed El-Tayeb ventured into the simple, dusty streets of his neighborhood in Dar-al-Salam-Taiwidat on the outskirts of Sudan's capital Khartoum, like the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin--only with a lure of delicious desert dates. This was his imaginative way of attracting large numbers of boys and girls, mostly orphans, off the streets of one of the poorest areas of the city and away from a gloomy future at best, into school.
Very much his school, in fact, and a community school as wel ... (more) |

More Commitment Than Cash: Companies Responsible To Their Communities
A significant first, on October 1st the Near East Foundation Consortium in Jordan showcased 30 projects of community-based organizations, reaching out for matching funds from the local business community. The September 5th issue of the influential "Jordan Business Monthly" featured an article on corporate social responsibility quoting at length NEF Consortium Manager Majdi Qorom. After Ramadan, the holy month in Islam ending in early November, NEF consultant Katherine J. Sullivan will address ... (more) |

RAMADAN FOOD PACKAGES - SMALL GESTURES BRING BIG COMFORT TO POOR PALESTINIANS
As the 2004 Ramadan began, 250 food packages cheered impoverished Palestinian families in the villages of Asira al-Shamiliyya, Yasid, Tuluzza, Al-Bathan and Bayt Imrin, all of whom have suffered extreme poverty in the past few years. Each package contained 16 different nutritious foods. Need was determined by the numbers of children and orphans, the sick and senior citizens, the unemployed and those families unable to maintain a minimum income level.
The mid-October distribution was initiat ... (more) |

Jonathan Belke - Experiencing Umrah for the First Time
It took several weeks of phone calls and faxes, endless advice, and countless trips to scattered offices, even an open letter in Arabic published in the leading Cairo daily, before I finally secured my “Umrah” visa for Saudi Arabia.
“Umrah” is the lesser pilgrimage Muslims from around the world make to the holy city of Mecca. This spiritually enlightening, emotionally fulfilling, and at times physically demanding pilgrimage was even more special for me since I was making it during the mont ... (more) |

And They Just Keep Coming… - NEFers Everywhere
Early October saw CDS Director, Alaa Saber and NEF-EMR Regional Director, Roger Hardister, in Jordan for the IUCN Conference. The conference provided a good opportunity to learn more about the World Conservation Union/IUCN - issues faced and current approaches to conservation and environmental management (see web page below). Being in Amman provided an opportunity to review current programs and discuss future cooperation with NEF-Jordan staff.
Roger Hardister was in New York in October for t ... (more) |

Board Members Review NEF Programs Abroad - Geoffrey A. Thompson and David S. Dodge in the Middle East
The purpose of Geoffrey Thompson's and my trip was to visit project sites of NEF's Eastern Mediterranean Region. We began the trip in Cairo where the main office of the Region is located. Roger Hardister, as Regional Director, supervises NEF field programs in Egypt, Sudan, West Bank/Gaza, Jordan, and Lebanon. He also supervises NEF's Center for Development Services (CDS), which is based in Cairo but renders services in several Middle Eastern countries, including Iran and Yemen, as well as those ...
