U.S. Ranks 19th in Giving
That’s the United States’ dismal aid effort among the 21 richest nations. But not counted are the millions of dollars people—just like you—give, including the thousands of individuals who have sustained the Near East Foundation through the years. LEBANON
NEF priorities were food, water, sleeping bags, first aid and hygiene kits, medicines, medical check-ups, psycho-social help for children.
NEF responded to the humanitarian crisis during this summer’s war, helping thousands of displaced families, particularly children, the elderly, and women who fled their homes and the bombing, even harvesting crops in the dangerous Bekaa Valley to be distributed to the displaced. NEF partnered with seven local nongovernmental organizations well located in the hardest hit areas, including southern Nabatiyeh and Sidon. (more) |

WEST BANK
The U.N. World Food Program became a partner to NEF's highly-successful "Cup of Milk" program.
Local bakeries producing biscuits and breads are now linked to our protein-rich dairy supplements reaching thousands of poor Palestinian families through local kindergartens. Thousands of tablets of antibiotics and bottles of antihistamines were distributed throughout the West Bank this summer. An illegal dumpsite for more than 30 years was transformed into a state-of-the-art, sanitary landfill. Our revitalization of the traditional Palestinian olive oil industry with advanced methods and modern equipment will extend into May 2007, benefiting hundreds more farmers. NEF staffs the new Asira Women's Center, in keeping with the important role of women in development. (more) |

SUDAN
Health--the centerpiece of NEF's work in the poorest settlement of internally displaced people in Khartoum.
In the only health clinic available for about 45,000 people fleeing violence and drought, NEF healthcare--particularly maternal-child health and family planning--expanded to include labor and delivery as well as advanced laboratory work. Also, NEF rehabilitated and equipped the community's only school; improved water supply and quality; met basic needs of poorest children; distributed food during the Ramadan and Eid holiday. And across Sudan, in both urban and rural communities, NEF's provided credit to low-income people. (more) |

MOROCCO
NEF's new educational approaches will be applied throughout the south of the country--in 8 provinces where 5 million people live.
NEF's gender-sensitive educational reforms in remote Berber villages in the High Atlas Mountains influenced the highest levels of policy-making in the Moroccan Ministry of Education. In so short a time, NEF breakthroughs account for truly remarkable numbers. 2,000 students--more than half of them girls--in 17 participating primary schools, where the majority of schools had no girls at all when we started. In some villages, school enrollment has leaped from zero to nearly half of all children. 30% increase in primary school graduations and 40% increase in secondary school completions. 50% increase--1,316 adults--participating in NEF-organized PTAs. JORDAN
Her Majesty Queen Rania visited the Jerash Women's Society, a participant in NEF's Qudorat ("Capacities") Program.
In addition to very public support from the Jordanian royal family, there has been wide-spread press coverage and increasing interest by the business community for Qudorat's strengthening of community-based organizations and creation of new income-generating projects. Nearly all new businesses are up and running and 33% are women-run with another 20 community-based organizations in the pipeline as the year ends. The response has been overwhelming from the beginning with 500 applications--six times more applicants than expected; over 300 trainees; 120 activities; 400 new jobs; 50 volunteer opportunities; and 40 business plans presented to the private sector. TOO MUCH TO TELL YOU
We have to at least mention...IRAQ where NEF helped rehabilitate agriculture and develop private farms and agro-business under most difficult conditions. MALI where 225,543 people in a band of 147 parched villages benefited. SWAZILAND where community leaders gained a working knowledge of their country's new national constitution and de-centralization policy...all thanks to you.
