NEF maintains an office in Khartoum with six staff members. It is has a general registration with the Government of Sudan to operate throughout the country, as well as a general license from the US Department of Treasury to conduct its activities in Sudan.

1) Internally Displaced Communities: Sudan's internal conflicts have forced an estimated two million people to flee to urban and peri-urban settlements in greater Khartoum. They receive few if any public services, such as running water, health care, education, and most survive on low-paying day labor.

Dar Al-Salaam Al-Rabwa: In this 30,000-member community approximately 40 kilometers from Khartoum, NEF built a health clinic in 2004 with support from the Packard Foundation and in 2006 added a maternity ward with support from the Population Council. Previously, there was no health care available in the community. The clinic, which NEF operates in partnership with the Ministry of Health, provides pre- and post-natal care, primary care, maternity services and health awareness. NEF also supports the Tagwa primary school, the Tawheed pre-school and the Awatif women's literacy program, all founded and operated by local residents. NEF has assisted community leaders in registering their own NGO, Zad El-Kheir, which NEF is training to assume management of the health clinic and NEF's other programs.

Soba: in this community of 35,000 in Khartoum, NEF supports five local NGO's providing primary and adult education, microcredit and services for the disabled. NEF is helping these NGO's organize into a network to strengthen their resources.

2) Community-Managed Credit. Since 2002, NEF has organized communities in northern Sudan and Khartoum, to provide microcredit to individuals starting or developing businesses, such as water delivery and handicrafts. NEF's program has provided 1,000 loans per year in each of 10 communities.

NEF's History in Sudan

NEF has worked in Sudan continuously since 1978 in the north, center and west (Darfur). Throughout the 1980s, NEF implemented rural development initiatives in partnership with local organizations to improve nutrition and supplement incomes. Since the early 1990s, NEF has provided training and technical assistance to help organizations in western Sudan bring basic health care, medicines, and clean drinking water to isolated areas and revitalize fish farming along the Blue Nile in the north of the country.

NEF works in cooperation with a variety of local and international partners, including Sudanese universities, local NGOs, international donors, UN agencies, government agencies and provincial governors. In particular, NEF has worked to build local capacity, having trained nearly two thousand local development professionals, volunteers, and community leaders in practice-oriented workshops since 1992.
