in Turkey and the subsequent demands placed
on the organization and its peers in Turkey,
Syria and Greece. He traces the NER exodus
from the Caucus under Soviet pressure and
summarizes the contributions made by NER
during these years.

Reed M. Davidson, Secretary-Treasurer of the Near
East Relief Circle in Cairo, corresponds with friends and supports
in the States, reflecting on the state of the World, his aspirations
and support for peace, and his concerns as to the possible reactions
of the newly independent Egyptian government to those still in
his care and of concern to the Circle, graduates of NER Circle
orphanages in Egypt only recently on their own and some still
in the process of obtaining Egyptian citizenship.
NEF Board Member, Ms. Georgiana G. Stevens , recounts
the events which led to the formation of the Near East Relief
and its transition to the Near East Foundation in the l930s. In
so doing, Ms. Stevens provides a clear illustration of the critical
role played by the Foundation in facilitating the emergence and
defining the nature of technical assistance as an essential ingredient
in the process of helping people to help themselves.

what could all this mean?
Denied the protection afforded by citizenship, the stateless
face a world of uncertainty. Haigaz Delenian, an Egyptian grocer
now in his 90s, tells his story along with others. Haigaz was rescued
as a young child from Turkey and cared for by Near East Relief,
first in Lebanon and later in Egypt. Haigaz recalls, " I don't
remember what age I was when I arrived to Egpt. I only remember
myself as in a dream."
