   On The Road with NEF President in Sudan

The meeting with Zad al-Khair took place at the community health clinic, which NEF founded in 2003 and continues to manage.

NEF's standard approach is to build and strengthen local organizations to provide services, rather than doing so itself. In this way, the services can continue without need of outside support.

Only one of four water stations in the community currently functions. Residents rely on deliveries of water by donkey cart.

At Soba, Mr. Papachristou visited a school and met with representatives of five community-based organizations, providing early childhood and adult literacy education, micro-finance, assistance to the disabled and other services.

A strong advocate for the provision of high quality health services for women, Dr. Tandiar Samir (l) has many years experience in reproductive health and sexuality education and counseling techniques for children.

Dr. Samir (c) just returned from a meeting of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative in Pretoria, South Africa, where she was named to their coordinating group.

A physician and specialist in maternal-child healthcare and family planning, Dr. Samir (l) is a senior trainer and social researcher who has worked in development for the past 16 years.

Dr. Samir (r) has been selected to be an Ashoka Fellow for her intense involvement in raising the caliber of nursing in the region.

All of the rural campers and half of those from the city had never seen the sea before splashing and playing around was part of their daily morning routine from July 19 to August 2.

There also were art classes in painting, theater, music and song, public speaking, even cooking.

Each child received a medical examination as well as a new sports outfit provided by the U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Thomas T. Riley, and the project's main funder, the U.S. Department of State's Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).

Summer camp, now in its second year, joins the growing list of NEF innovations bringing a fresh incentive to primary school education, particularly geared to attracting the participation of girls and women.

   NEF Appoints New President

New NEF President Alexander Papachristou visited the El Tagwa School in the Dar Salam community in Greater Khartoum, Sudan, where NEF programs currently are centered. He traveled to various NEF regional locations during his early days on the job.

In Jordan, the NEF President attended the inauguration of the Reif Anjara Cooperative’s Qudorat Center for Car Service and Maintenance, where he chatted with Ali-Al-Sharaa, Governor of Ajloun Governorate (l) and coop manager Muhammad Smadi (r).
