| Opportunities in Jordan
[عربي]
The Near East Foundation (NEF) is seeking to recruit an all star
core professional staff for an upcoming project related to increasing
water use efficiency and generating economic opportunities in Jordan.
A major multi-year undertaking, the project addresses the problem
of constant and significant discharges of salty water from a recently
constructed desalination plant in one of Jordan’s largest
cities. Focus is on the development of a large-scale “fish
garden” or “water park” encompassing fish hatcheries,
ponds for commercial fish production, and a variety of related activities
that reuse, reduce or eliminate these discharges. In addition to
fish production, the project also provides for recreational activities
and serves as a major center for public education on issues and
activities relating to aquaculture, water use efficiency, and natural
resource management.
Adjacent to the project area are extensive unused and potentially
productive lands. Enriched water flows from fish ponds and related
activities will be channeled to these areas where a variety of experiments
are to be conducted relating to dry lands agriculture. These include
selection and development of appropriate plant materials, variations
in crop rotation and cropping patterns, irrigation methods, and
overall land use management.
The implementation of these activities will stimulate economic
development in surrounding areas as well as across Jordan. Additional,
auxiliary activities included in the project include an education
and training center, business nursery, aquarium, shops, and restaurants,
as well as a wide variety of aquaculture support activities. The
majority of these are seen as opportunities for private investment
rather than public projects or NGO activities.
The Foundations welcomes applications from Jordanians and others
from the Middle East and North Africa as well as internationals
from beyond the region. A familiarity with Arabic and English is
essential for most positions. Additional technical and support positions
will be announced at a late date. |
| The Near East Foundation does
not now have a formal program for those seeking to
provide voluntary services. In most cases we are unable
to respond to such requests. We hope however in the
future to be able to offer such opportunities. If you would like
to post your information, please feel free to do so. We will forward
it to the appropriate Country Program Director for consideration.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to respond to you on a personal
basis from this site. |
