Of the 100 million children not in school, the majority are girls; of the 800 million adults who cannot read, the majority are women. Women's work is undervalued, underpaid, or not paid at all. Women are under-represented as leaders and decision-makers. Worst of all, women and girls experience violence in both war and peace. NEF is changing that. Where the majority of schools once had no girls at all, now girls are the majority in classrooms in remote Moroccan villages because of our gender-sensitive educational reform--and their mothers are by far the majority in our adult literacy classes. Women-run businesses constitute 33% of participants in our income-generating boost to Jordanian community-based organizations. 97% of the women who come to our Sudanese health center have experienced female genital mutilation and need help with damaged self image & sexuality in addition to complications in childbirth. Just licensed to work in Ethiopia, NEF will partner with a gender justice association providing legal training, referral service for battered women, counseling on issues like female genital mutilation, abduction and rape of prospective wives--prevalent practices.
